Eye Movements
(Netra Vyayamam)

Netra Vyayamam, a set of eye exercises from the ancient Indian practice of yoga, can be beneficial for brain injury recovery. These exercises can help improve eye coordination, focus, and visual tracking, all of which can be impaired after a brain injury.

Here are some examples of Netra Vyayamam exercises that can be helpful for brain injury recovery:

  • Palming: Rub your hands together to warm them, then cup them over your closed eyes. This can help relax the eye muscles and reduce strain.

  • Eye Rolling: Gently roll your eyes in a clockwise and counterclockwise direction. This can help improve eye mobility and reduce stiffness.

  • Side-to-Side Eye Movements: Move your eyes from side to side, focusing on a fixed point at each end of the movement. This can help improve eye tracking and coordination.

  • Up-and-Down Eye Movements: Move your eyes up and down, focusing on a fixed point at the top and bottom of the movement. This can also help improve eye tracking and coordination.

  • Diagonal Eye Movements: Move your eyes diagonally from one corner to the other, focusing on a fixed point at each end of the movement. This can help improve eye coordination and overall eye movement.

These exercises can be done for a few minutes at a time, several times a day. It is important to consult with a medical professional before starting any new exercise program, especially after a brain injury.

Here are some ways that Netra Vyayamam can improve the condition of someone recovering from a brain injury:

  • Improved eye coordination and focus: Brain injuries can often impair eye coordination and focus. Netra Vyayamam exercises can help strengthen the eye muscles and improve their ability to work together.

  • Reduced eye strain: Staring at screens and other close-up objects for long periods can lead to eye strain, which can be exacerbated by a brain injury. Netra Vyayamam exercises can help relax the eye muscles and reduce strain.

  • Increased blood flow to the eyes: The exercises can help increase blood flow to the eyes, which can help nourish the eye tissues and promote healing.

  • Improved overall brain function: The eyes are connected to the brain, and improving eye function can have a positive impact on overall brain function.

It is important to note that Netra Vyayamam is not a cure, however, it can be a helpful tool for improving eye function and overall recovery. It is always best to consult with a medical professional for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.
